NiMet issues heatwave advisory across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a prolonged heatwave across the country in the coming days, with temperatures expected to remain high and rise slightly in some areas.

In its weather outlook released on Wednesday, NiMet reported that maximum temperatures across the country ranged between 38°C and 40°C as of February 19.

“Maximum temperature reports across the country were mostly between 38 – 40℃,” the forecast stated.

According to the agency, temperatures recorded on Wednesday stood at 38℃ in cities such as Port Harcourt, Owerri, Enugu, Awka, Bida, Minna, Gusau, Iseyin, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Meanwhile, 39℃ was recorded in Sokoto, Kebbi, Lokoja, Makurdi, Abakaliki, Ikom, Jalingo, and Yola, while Yelwa experienced the highest at 40℃.

NiMet has advised the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated, seeking cool or air-conditioned environments, wearing light and breathable clothing, and ensuring proper ventilation for infants.

“Early morning, daytime, and nighttime temperatures will feel warmer than their actual values, leading to increased discomfort,” the agency warned. It also noted that a combination of high temperatures and moisture influx would further intensify discomfort levels nationwide.

Areas expected to be most affected by the heatwave include parts of Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Kogi, Oyo, Kwara, Niger, the FCT, and Bayelsa. Other states on the list are Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Osun, Zamfara, and Sokoto.

NiMet urges Nigerians to take necessary precautions as the heatwave persists.
