Nigeria’s President Tinubu pushes for green investment at Abu Dhabi summit

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president, has called for unified global efforts to tackle climate change, citing inclusivity, equity, and innovation as essential for sustainable development.

Speaking at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week themed: from climate imperatives to economic prosperity: bringing Africa into the future of global energy,’ Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s leadership role in advancing Africa’s sustainability agenda.

“Resilience against the adverse effects of climate change is essential for safeguarding our African communities and economies, but sustainability must be inclusive,” Tinubu said.

The president highlighted Nigeria’s strategic approach anchored on three pillars: energy transition, climate resilience, and sustainable development. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, diversifying energy sources, and prioritising the transition to clean and renewable energy.

“Our energy transition plans aim to reduce dependency on fossil fuels while promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth,” Tinubu said.

“We are developing infrastructure for compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles while harnessing the potential of solid minerals to support the green energy transition.”

He also underlined Nigeria’s innovative strides in funding green projects, noting that the country was the first in Africa to issue Sovereign Green Bonds, with a third issuance currently in progress.

Tinubu called on international investors, multinationals, and development partners to collaborate with Nigeria to advance sustainable practices and integrate technological innovation into environmental solutions.

“To promote a green economy in Africa, we must integrate sustainable practices across all sectors. These investments are capital intensive and require international support to realise our vision of a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable future,” he said.

In addition, he said the fight against climate change is not just an environmental necessity but a global economic opportunity to reshape Africa’s trajectory and its role in the global energy landscape.

“As leaders, stakeholders, and citizens of our planet, we stand at a critical juncture in human history. To succeed, we must innovate, collaborate, and act decisively as one global community.”

He highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, utilising arable lands for advanced agricultural technologies, and exploring the potential of artificial intelligence to tackle environmental challenges.
